The Soviet T-34-85 tank - featuring the rare "Dmitry Donskoy" tank company winter camouflage - and the German 7.5 cm PaK 40 anti-tank gun form a unique pairing. They evoke one of the most iconic clashes of the war's final phase: the duel between Soviet armored forces and German anti-tank defenses.

Red Army General

An experienced commander in a distinctive Soviet uniform adorned with medals oversees the winter offensive. He wears an officer's cap and trousers with red piping. Glasses and a thick mustache accentuate his stern appearance, while his resolute posture suggests he is issuing an order for the next assault.

Soviet Tanker
A crew member of the legendary T-34-85, dressed in work overalls and a protective tanker helmet. He holds a PPS-43 submachine gun, ready to defend the vehicle from within or during combat outside its steel armor.

Red Army Officer
A white winter camouflage coat allows him to blend almost seamlessly into the snowy landscape. He wears an ushanka hat featuring a red star. Armed with a TT pistol, he carefully scans the area, watching for signs of an approaching enemy.

German Mountain Infantry Sniper (Gebirgsjäger)

Wearing a winter suit and a helmet with snow camouflage, he observes the terrain ahead. With binoculars in hand, he closely tracks every movement, scanning for approaching vehicles and relaying information to the anti-tank gun crew.

The T-34-85: The Tank That Changed the Face of the War

In 1943, the Red Army concluded that T-34 tanks armed with the 76mm gun were no longer effective enough against new German designs such as the Panther, Tiger and up-armored Panzer IV. Consequently, work began on a new version of the tank featuring a larger turret and significantly more powerful armament. One of the first results of these efforts was the T-34-85 D-5T variant.

The first production T-34-85 D-5T tanks appeared in early 1944. They featured a new three-man turret and the 85mm D-5T gun, which provided substantially greater firepower and enabled more effective combat against heavily armored German tanks. At the same time, the proven hull—constructed from sloped armor plates - and the reliable V-2 diesel engine were retained, ensuring the tank remained highly mobile and easy to operate.

The D-5T variant was produced for only a short time before being replaced by a version armed with the ZiS-S-53 gun - a weapon that was simpler and easier to manufacture—which became the standard armament for T-34-85 tanks. Despite the relatively small number of units produced, the T-34-85 D-5T played a significant role in the transitional phase of modernizing one of World War II's most famous tanks and contributed to enhancing the effectiveness of Soviet armored forces during operations on the Eastern Front.

The "Dmitry Donskoy" Armored Column

This column was funded through a fundraising campaign conducted by the Russian Orthodox Church between 1943 and 1944. The faithful donated over 8 million rubles to support the Red Army, enabling the construction of 40 tanks: 19 T-34-85 medium tanks and 21 OT-34 flamethrower tanks. In March 1944, the column was ceremonially handed over to the military and saw action in Belarus, Poland and Lithuania, as well as during the final offensive into German territory.

The 7.5 cm PaK 40: Germany's most formidable anti-tank gun

Development of the 7.5 cm PaK 40 began before the outbreak of World War II, but it was the 1941 clashes with Soviet T-34 and KV tanks that accelerated its progress. It quickly became the standard German anti-tank gun and remained so until the end of the war.

The PaK 40 fired armor-piercing, sub-caliber and high-explosive fragmentation ammunition. Its sub-caliber round could penetrate approximately 154 mm of armor at a range of 500 meters, allowing the gun to effectively engage most Allied tanks.

Its greatest drawback was its considerable weight, necessitating the use of artillery tractors or half-tracks for transport. Approximately 23,000 PaK 40 units were produced; the weapon saw service not only with the Wehrmacht but also with the armies of Axis nations and - as captured equipment - with the Red Army.

The T-34-85 and the PaK 40 are among the most recognizable designs of World War II. The Soviet tank symbolized the offensive power of the Red Army, while the German gun served as the backbone of the Wehrmacht's anti-tank defense.

Their encounters on the battlefields of Eastern Europe were among the most frequent and fierce clashes of the war's final stages. Each duel tested the crews' skills, the effectiveness of the weaponry and the tactical use of the terrain.
