From Fast Passenger Plane to Luftwaffe Bomber
The history of the Heinkel He 111 dates back to the early 1930s, when designer Ernst Heinkel set out to create one of the fastest passenger aircraft of the era. The project was developed by Siegfried and Walter Günter, who created a modern machine featuring an aerodynamic profile and distinctive elliptical wings. Shortly thereafter, the He 70 Blitz model was unveiled; capable of reaching speeds of 320 km/h, it could be easily converted into a military aircraft. In the mid-1930s, the He 111 design was submitted to the Reich Ministry of Aviation's bomber competition.
In November 1939, the He 111 H-3 variant was introduced, powered by 1,200 hp Jumo 211D engines. This version featured upgraded defensive armament, consisting of up to six MG 15 machine guns positioned in the nose, dorsal, ventral and lateral stations. The typical bomb load amounted to 2,000 kg, carried internally within the fuselage.
During World War II, the He 111 became one of the Luftwaffe's primary bombers, particularly renowned for its role in the Battle of Britain.
The Heinkel He 111 has secured a permanent place in the history of 20th-century aviation. Now, you can recreate its distinctive silhouette using building blocks and add it to your collection.
