An outstanding commander and strategist
Horatio Nelson was the most famous admiral in the history of the British Navy, twice defeating the French fleet, for which he was immortalized in the pages of history – and on the famous column in London. His strategic genius and ability to predict the course of battles were admired, and his achievements had a lasting impact on the history of naval warfare.
Battle of Trafalgar
In 1805, after the outbreak of another war with Horatio Nelson and his fleet operated in the Mediterranean, blockading French ships in Toulon for two years.
A combined Franco-Spanish force broke the blockade. Nelson then devised an effective plan and won victory at Trafalgar. The English captured or sank 19 enemy ships, losing only one. Nelson was killed, but he secured England's naval dominance for over a century.
Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London
The monument was designed by William Railton around 1838. The granite column is 51.6 meters high, and the statue of Nelson was sculpted by Edward Hodges Baily. The pedestal is decorated with four bronze bas-reliefs made from melted-down French cannons. They depict the battles of Cape St. Vincent, Abukir, Copenhagen and Trafalgar. They were sculpted by various artists, and their creation continued until 1854. One of them was even the subject of a court case related to the falsification of the bronze alloy.
An additional decorative element of the base are four bronze lions, designed by Sir Edwin Landseer and cast by Carlo Marochetti in 1867. The brick model also includes these reliefs in the form of high-quality prints
