The Fiat 126p was presented in 1972 by the Italian company Fiat as a model for mass production. In Poland, it was produced from 1973 at the Fabryka Samochodów Małolitrażowych in Tychy (FSM). It quickly gained enormous popularity, becoming one of the first cars available to a wide group of citizens in the Polish People's Republic, which made it a car "for every budget".

Production of the Fiat 126p in Poland lasted until 2000, making it one of the longest-produced cars in the history of the automotive industry. In total, over 4.6 million units of this model were produced.
